Charly Stoever: Belonging Without Code-Switching And Finding Their Vision For Public Speaking

How non-binary, Latinx money coach and podcaster Charly Stoever found their vision for public speaking through the Speaker Movement.

If you’ve ever been told money talk is off-limits, Charly (they/them) is the antidote.

A non-binary Latinx Money Coach and host of the Unicorn Millionaire podcast, Charly creates space for LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and first-gen folks to crush debt and build a six-figure retirement—without needing a six-figure salary.

Fun fact: Charly has run their business from over 20 countries—from Thailand to Mexico—and loves pet sitting while traveling.

Wanted to find a community where they didn’t have to be the “only one in the room”

“Coaching and speaking spaces are dominated by either cis white men or cis heterosexual women. I wanted to connect with other people like me who were queer and Latinx because running an online business while traveling can be lonely.”

Charly quit their stockbroker job after this major realization: the people they were serving in traditional finance (rich white men) didn’t actually need their help.

What they really wanted was to use their skills to support communities who’d been left out of the money conversation altogether: LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and first-gen folks.

“We dive into money wounds [and] how your parents talked about money or did not talk about money. Because all of that is the reason why people have not gotten their finances together.

I’m often the first person that they can talk to about money without being judged.”

Now, their mission is all about making financial literacy shame-free and accessible.

Stage fright? We don’t know them: Charly loved the idea of public speaking…

Between hosting their podcast, running workshops, and their background as a teacher (plus years in sports), stage fright simply wasn’t in Charly’s vocabulary.

They knew how to break down complex ideas and keep an audience engaged.

“It’s great to see people’s reactions when I blow their brains about how easy it can be to actually invest and build wealth without needing a six figure salary.”

The gap between believing you’re a speaker and fully embracing your speaker identity

Speaking was second nature to Charly. But finding stages and communities where they didn’t have to be “the only one in the room”? That was the missing piece.

“When I met Steph on Threads, I was like, ‘Oh my god, her community is going to be the space where I’m not the token queer or Latinx person—where it’s not all just about girl bossing it and girl power and getting misgendered.”

Charly’s Experience in the Speaker Movement Community: Redefining what community, connection, and a public speaking career can look like for them

The biggest difference: A community that celebrates Charly’s whole self

In the Speaker Movement Community, Fiestas are weekly hangouts where people with multi-layered identities gather to chat about business and life without a looming sense of self-erasure.

Here the conversations are rooted in LGBTQ+, BIPOC, and first-gen culture—open to nuance and unafraid to go deep.

And Charly loves that people show up with stories about family, identity, and the realities of building a business outside the cis-hetero-white mold.

“In Steph’s community, I’m able to amplify what I’ve learned about myself as a queer trans person and share that in a safe space without feeling like I have to educate people about what pronouns are and what it’s like to be me.

It’s also a great place to learn from each other. And Steph is such a positive person—it’s great to be in a space facilitated by that energy.”

An important mindset shift about speaking opportunities

Confidence to speak wasn’t a challenge for Charly.

Their hesitation came from a quiet belief that public speaking had to look a certain way: polished, corporate, perfectly packaged. That wasn’t Charly anymore.

They were also holding themself back from actively pitching for speaking opportunities because sliding into DMs and asking to speak felt icky.

Then Steph reframed this belief and offered more win-win ways to step into their speaker identity.

“I’ve had Steph on my podcast to talk about her approach to public speaking and I like how she just normalizes that it’s something that we all can and should do. It doesn’t have to look a certain way.

Steph also showed me there are so many other ways to get paid—like in-kind exchanges or service swaps.

It opened my eyes to possibilities I hadn’t considered, especially since pitching myself isn’t something I normally do.”

A plot twist that turned into a valuable lesson

With this fresh perspective on public speaking, Charly began putting themself out there more—and landed podcasting workshops at WeWorks in Seattle and Oregon.

Plot twist?

It was a full-circle moment: the workshops were attended by cis men in their 9-5s who were curious about starting a business and podcast, but wobbly on the follow through.

In other words: not Charly’s audience

But instead of chalking it up as a failure, they took it as an opportunity to course correct.

“These experiences taught me I was just pitching to the wrong spaces. If I’m going to take the time to pitch or plan an event, I need to be sure my audience actually wants to learn about the topic.”

Planting seeds for their public speaking career with clarity and direction—Doubling down on brand visibility

After these perspective shifts, Charly focused on making sure they were attracting the right opportunities.

They adjusted their website’s SEO and added their values so people searching for inclusive, shame-free financial guidance could discover them easily as the first step.

“I also revived my YouTube channel and I’ve started to put my podcast episodes on that. I’m doing all the backend work before pitching myself for different conferences.”

An expansive vision about their role as a speaker, educator, and changemaker

Charly also learned just how much financial misinformation circulates in underrepresented communities during a public library speaking engagement.

Now, their vision goes far beyond one-off workshops.

Charly is dreaming up retreats in Costa Rica and beyond. Creating spaces where people can explore both financial literacy and wellness through a holistic lens.
